Recreational Concepts - Tips

  • Gas appliances:
Not many people know but there is a national organization called ESS (energy safety services). They have a published list of gas appliances that comply with NZ Safety standards. According to their regulations No one in New Zealand is supposed to service any item that is not currently on the list. So beware when buying second hand gas appliances as you may not be able to get them fixed if they fail. You can view the list by following this link www.ess.govt.nz/product/search.asp

  • GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass):
Even though your tare weight may say 4400kg it does not mean that it is what the vehicle actually weighs. Even more importantly if you exceed the GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) then you could be up for some nasty fines. One way to check is to go to your local rubbish dump and get them to weigh you before you embark on your journey, it doesn’t cost much but it could save you a lot.

  • Fridge problems:
The first most common fridge problem is poor cooling due to overheating. Because of how most fridges are designed it is important to have adequate ventilation. Some fridges can work for years without it and then all of a sudden they don’t.

  • Power consumption:
A great way to go to save power consumption is to install low consumption products like an LCD TV or LED lights; another consideration is to stay away from inverters (12v to 240v) where possible as through the conversion from 240v to 12v there is always some wastage.

  • Thetford cassette toilets:
If you have the C2 type (which has a top tank for water) it is recommended that you use the Pink chemical in the top tank, this lubricates the slide seal. Also it is recommended that you use the green chemical for the bottom tank (cassette) this breaks down the waste and keeps the smell under control. Whatever you do don’t pour the green chemical down the toilet in order to get it into the bottom tank as it will promote disintegration of the slide seal
